Ariba, an SAP company, is seeking a leader with world-class management skills to lead and grow our extraordinary development team as part of the Ariba CTO office. You will work with the rest of our leadership team to shape strategic direction for our product and business, and you will be responsible for all development activity. The right leader will inspire and enable our engineering teams to build a service on time and on budget that thrills our customers.

 

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

The VP of Software Engineering must have a strong track record of execution and delivery, the ability to get things done and ship product. In addition, he or she will:

Build and motivate a world class team of development and operations engineers

Set department vision, objectives, and goals which are realized through a management team.

Drive product delivery through Agile development methodologies.

Allow software to react quickly to changing market and business needs.

Ensure on-time delivery of new capabilities and on-going compliance to SLAs

Develop and manage-to budgets for development and service delivery

Partner with rest of leadership team and key stakeholders to set strategic direction

Oversee interactions with other teams at SAP to ensure on-time delivery of joint products and effective management of customer interactions

Formulate long-term standards of performance for the team

Provide mentoring and management for team members by 1:1s, reviewing design docs, and team coaching and engineering execution.

 

COMPETENCIES

Functional Expertise: Familiarity in multiple front and backend programming languages including Angular, CSS, JavaScript, HTML5, Spring Framework, Java, Multi-threaded Applications, Node.js, Hadoop, Spark etc.

Technical Capability: Ability to learn technical languages and development frameworks easily.

Open Source Competence: Comfort in the use of multiple open source frame works.

Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple work-streams, deliver performance against key schedules, and work effectively under pressure.

Individual Initiative: Excel in an unstructured environment and can manage the work streams of both herself and direct reports appropriately.

Principle based decision making:  Prioritizes the best interests of the organization and the goals of Ariba over process constraints and is willing to escalate troubling issues.

Time Management: Uses time effectively and efficiently; values time, has strong multi-tasking skills.

Leadership Skills & Empathy: Can recruit, train, and manage people with an understanding that a team is comprised of individual human beings who each desire to be managed with their best interest at heart, given opportunities for growth, and offered an opportunity to participate in the creation of something larger than themselves.

Satisfaction:  Takes pride and joy from the success of the partnership and the team.

Interest in Innovation: Is naturally drawn towards big, new ideas, and maintains a natural inclination to support internal innovators.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

15+ years of proven leadership, managing and growing teams to over 60 engineers and managers

Have a proven track record of building a culture of design excellence that develop high-impact products

Demonstrated success recruiting and retaining high quality technical teams

Experience delivering Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS),  or Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings to Enterprise customers

Advanced knowledge of cloud technologies and developer operations tools

Experience in developing applications that leverage connections into disparate application environments

Experience implementing well-run, agile processes in multiple functions: Development, QA, Release, SRE, and Ops

Ability to communicate vision and strategy effectively to the team, partners and clients

Experience managing dependencies on other teams within a larger organization

Technical knowledge required to command the respect of high-octane engineering team

Strong advocate for Agile development processes

Ability to deliver highest quality under deadline pressure, while juggling multiple tasks  and in complex environments, strong organizational skills

Intellectually rigorous and creative problem-solving ability

High EQ, low ego

MS or PhD in Computer Science or related degree
