PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

The SAP HANA in-memory database is the basis for new, ground-breaking SAP applications and is widely agreed to be a highly asset in the SAP software portfolio. In-memory computing is made possible through recent technology advances in main memory, multi-core processing, and data management. It leverages technology innovation to establish real-time analysis of business data and combines both transactions and analytics to improve existing business processes with a dramatic increase in performance. The SAP HANA in-memory database as basis for the in-memory computing shows enormous promise as a key driver for SAP market of the future.
The development of the SAP HANA in-memory database is distributed over all continents.  You will be part of the development team in Walldorf with more than 100 exceptionally talented and motivated colleagues. We live code development in a flexible and agile way. You will be part of small and self-organized groups of developer.
The SAP HANA SQLScript team develops the programming language (SQLScript) and the related compiler to process user defined stored procedures and functions in SAP HANA. SQLScript is an extension of the SQL language. Besides extending the programming language constantly with powerful features aiming to ease application developer’s life we optimize for maximum throughput in OLTP scenarios, minimum response time in OLAP scenarios and workload dependent in mixed scenarios. To support customers in programming SQLScript we are also investing in supportive tooling such as a debugger and visualization of complex execution plans. We are looking for C++-developers to bring their talents to the SAP HANA SQLScript team.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

We are looking for C++ developers with a strong focus on compilers and query processing. 
The main task of the job is to extend SQLScript compiler by implementing new SQL language features and extending it for better optimization of complex multi-statement logic.

On a usual day you will...

  • Extend SQLScript compiler with new relational and imperative language features
  • Implement compiler back ends for various SQL dialects
  • Implement new optimization rules
  • Enhance SQLScript debugger
  • Co-work with colleagues from various locations
  • Do code reviews and code audits to spot opportunities for improvements with respect to usability, testability, supportability, or potential performance penalties
  • Write regression tests for your own code using different programming languages (e.g. C++, Python, SQL) and testing frameworks (e.g. Google C++ Testing Framework)
  • Continually enhance your existing skills and seek new areas for personal development

In addition to that you will...

  • Analyze real-world SQLScript scenarios and improve SQLScript supportability such as plan visualization
  • Co-work with related teams to enhance SQLScript related tooling such as programming IDEs

 

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Required skills

  • Strong C++ programming skills and experience in implementing performance critical algorithms
  • Knowledge on relational database management systems, query processing and SQL
  • Ability to analyze and debug complex problems
  • Good knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design
  • Verbal and written working proficiency in English and German

Preferred skills

  • Experience in SQLScript
  • Experience in Administration, Programming or Profiling on Linux
  • Knowledge of code-analysis tools e.g. Valgrind, Intel Amplifier, Cppchecker
  • Experience with state of the art development tools e.g. Git, Gerrit, Bugzilla, CMake
  • Python or Shell-Scripting programming skills
  • Knowledge in design patterns and object oriented programming

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 3 or more years of professional experience in C++ development.
