About the Database SRE Role

SAP is revolutionizing the database platform through advancement in main-memory computing, multi-core processing, and distributed systems and data management. The SAP databases are the basis for a disruptive technology that fosters new design thinking in the application space. They leverage technology innovation to enable real-time analysis of business data and combine both transactions and analytics to improve existing business processes with a dramatic increase in performance.

 

We are looking for highly talented and motivated Site Reliability Engineers (SRE) to help us build and run these large-scale production database systems on a range of cloud platforms and systems. Your skills and initiative will ensure our systems have the reliability, up-time, and overall performance that our demanding customers require.

 

Our SRE approach is more encompassing than traditional DevOps. We emphasize the Engineering aspect of the position. You will use engineering principles to innovate and develop solutions to solve the difficult problems that arise when complex software products are run in parallel across diverse cloud environments. In addition to current technology, you will work on new exciting technologies in the field of distributed cloud infrastructure.

Expectations and Tasks

As a key member of a growing and versatile team, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Be an integral member of an agile global SRE team that designs, implements, tests, documents, operates and maintains our cloud database services
  • Maintain services once they are live by measuring and monitoring availability, latency, and overall system health
  • Collaborate with the engineering teams and other technical experts to deliver on cloud projects like resilience, customer provisioning, landscape management, build pipelines, and development infrastructure
  • Identify areas for improvement in the current system design and advocate for alternative methods to enhance our services
  • Maintain a strong focus on quality to ensure successful user experience and customer success
  • Provide alternative diagnostic methods to resolve problems reported internally and by customers
  • Respond to escalated customer service issues with a high level of skill
  • Become the go-to person for escalations, outages, and any service issues
  • Collaborate with engineering teams in different geographic locations to diagnose and resolve issues and customer reported problems
  • Invest in continuous learning to upskill yourself and be a technical expert for the solution for all topics, including landscape setup, upgrade, troubleshooting, monitoring, and minimizing customer disruptions
  • Develop technical skills through mentoring, knowledge transfer, and courses

 

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with at least 1-3 years of cloud software development and operational experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
  • Able to multi-task and work independently, and take initiative to prioritize, investigate, and resolve problems
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills
  • Experience with Linux
  • Experience working on databases, automation frameworks, application installation/deployment, and security configuration management tools
  • Experience in one or more of the following: C, C++, Java, Python, Go, Perl, or Ruby
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and the confidence to make independent decisions
  • Able to develop automation solutions and tools
  • Willingness and ability to handle on call/customer escalations
  • Experience in using, operating, and managing cloud infrastructures and services based on Cloud Foundry, AWS, GCP, or Azure
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
