DevOps Engineer - Cloud Observability Platform

We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

Every SAP cloud service needs to know what's happening inside it — at any moment, at any scale. Our team builds the platform that makes that possible: a unified OpenTelemetry observability stack routing metrics, traces, and logs across SAP's cloud landscape.

You'll join a small, cross-functional engineering team and take end-to-end ownership of the services and infrastructure that keep this platform running and growing. From your first sprint, you'll contribute to real production systems used by engineering teams across SAP.

What you'll build

In this role, you'll work across the full lifecycle of cloud-native services — designing, implementing, testing, and operating them in production. Your work will directly impact the reliability and scalability of OctoRoute and Collector-as-a-Service (CaaS) — the observability infrastructure that SAP engineering teams and customers depend on every day.

You'll be responsible for delivering sprint commitments end-to-end: writing the code, owning the tests, shipping the documentation, and keeping your services healthy in production. Whether that means building out a Kubernetes operator, improving a CI/CD pipeline, onboarding a new tenant, or hardening a platform against security requirements — you'll own it from start to finish.

Your work will directly contribute to SAP's strategic shift to OpenTelemetry — one of the most significant platform modernization efforts in cloud observability today.

What you bring

You're a cloud-native engineer who's comfortable owning services in production. You don't need every requirement spelled out — you pick up context, ask the right questions, and deliver.

Essential:

  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes (operating workloads, writing manifests, understanding cluster lifecycle)
  • Solid programming skills in Go or another systems language — you write clean, testable code
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows
  • Comfort working in cloud environments (GCP, Azure, or AWS)
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English — written and verbal

A strong plus:

  • Experience with OpenTelemetry or other observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, distributed tracing)
  • Exposure to Kafka or other message streaming platforms
  • Experience building or operating Kubernetes operators
  • Familiarity with security and compliance practices in cloud environments (policy enforcement, cert management)

Mindset:

  • You take ownership — if something is broken or unclear, you don't wait for someone else to fix it
  • You share what you know — documentation, knowledge transfer, and code reviews are part of how you work
  • You're comfortable with ambiguity and can navigate it without getting stuck

Where you belong

Our team is small, cross-functional, and operates with a high degree of autonomy. You'll work in structured two-week sprints with regular ceremonies — standups, sprint reviews, retrospectives — but between those touchpoints, you own your work. No micromanagement, no waiting for permission.

The team spans three scrum teams (Platform Engineering, Telemetry Engineering, and Tenant Architecture), all working toward the same mission. You'll collaborate closely with colleagues across these teams, share context freely, and be expected to contribute beyond your immediate squad — through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and pairing on complex problems.

What makes this team different:

  • You'll work on products that matter at SAP scale — not internal tooling nobody uses
  • Small team means high visibility: your contributions are seen and recognized
  • We invest in your growth — pair programming, cross-team exposure, and the chance to deepen expertise in a fast-moving space (OpenTelemetry, Kubernetes, cloud infrastructure)
  • 24x7 on-call participation — you'll be part of keeping production healthy, which accelerates learning faster than any training program

The practicalities:

  • Based in Budapest, Hungary
  • Hybrid working model
  • SAP's full benefits package applies, including flexible working arrangements and parental leave
