The Business Development role is a key contributor to the business unit in identifying, evaluating and executing on important investment opportunities, such as Industry Cloud. It has significant influence on the development and growth of profitable new platform businesses and develops and maintains effective strategic relationships with industries technology and emerging cloud partners, focusing on Automotive and Industrial Machinery & Components (IM&C) Industries (includes Industrial Manufacturing, Discrete Manufacturing, Heavy Equipment). Accountable to ensure business growth through business development activities to ensure they are delivered in accordance with the organizational strategy. Impacts the revenue growth and profitability of the company through strategic and tactical decisions and new business development results.



Area 1

  • Generates compelling business strategies/plans and business cases for the Automotive and IM&C go to market and sales teams, according to market trends and technology capabilities
  • Build and maintain sustainable industry-led relationships on C-Level and interact as a trusted partner in key customer organizations
  • Establish regional ecosystem of industry innovations to exchange business strategies and technology trends; position and revert back with the SAP industry portfolio
  • Develop and pursue technology partnerships which extend SAP’s portfolio and new business model innovations
  • Leads the effort of identifying, sourcing, managing and implementing new business opportunities for the Automotive and IM&C sales teams

Area 2

  • Contributes to the development and refinement of SAP's vision and strategy for the Automotive and IM&C IBUs
  • Supports the process of management and corporate decision- making to ensure the organization maximizes short, medium- and long-term profitability and shareholder returns
  • May provide senior executive level leadership on leveraging new business development strategies and business plans throughout NA
  • Provides leadership to all levels of the organization including regional and local executive teams


Area 3


  • Liaise with executive heads on the implementation of strategic and operational plans for customer requirements, customer councils, and partnerships or targeted routes to market
  • Liaise with the global Discrete Industries regional leaders to ensure alignment with the region go-to-market strategy and execution plans
  • Contributes to the development, review, and reporting on business development strategies ensuring strategic objectives are well understood and executed by the team. May indirectly lead a team to identify, evaluate and execute on important investment opportunities


  • Senior level experience (10+ years) significant technology partner, cloud and platform experience driving complex transactions and leveraging new business models to generate incremental revenue
  • Significant experience in a variety of disciplines and a strong record of achievement in strategy development, sales execution and business development
  • Extensive experience in more than one of the following backgrounds:
    • Enterprise Software, Platform technologies, Sales, Industry Operations or Corporate Development
    • Experience working with the following industries: Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Discrete Manufacturing, Automation and Control OR Heavy Equipment
  • Preferred candidates will have 5 + years of previous work experience building strong partner and customer relationships with a track record of C-level interactions
  • Capable of leading and influencing at the senior executive level and working well with customer or partner executives globally


  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Enterprise Applications market and competitive landscape
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior management (both customers and SAP's senior management), able to generate buy-in, make quick solid decisions
  • Proven sales experience in supporting sizable software deals; demonstrated sales proficiency in SAP or competitive products
  • Experience in working in global / diverse and virtual teams
  • Focus on quality and excellence
  • Excellent Communication Skills (Verbal, Written, Listening, Presentation)
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment
  • Fluent English, other languages a plus
  • Up to 80% travel
  • Location – Chicago
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
