Senior Data Engineer Operations - SAP Enterprise Knowledge Graph
We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.
What you'll build
The SAP Global Content Group (GCG) Engineering team builds the SAP Enterprise Knowledge Graph (EKG) — integrating SAP's reference business data across products, processes, and business objects into a unified semantic layer. To create and maintain the EKG, we develop an internal platform that exposes the knowledge graph via data access APIs and AI-powered services, and powers a neuro-symbolic AI application that enables intelligent search, reasoning, and knowledge exploration across SAP's enterprise data. This platform runs on a Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure on SAP's Business Technology Platform (BTP), operating continuously to serve users and dependent services around the globe.
As a Senior Data Engineer in our Content Infrastructure & Automation team based in India, you are a senior individual contributor who owns complex data engineering challenges end-to-end and serves as the team's critical operational anchor during European off-hours:
- Design, build, and operate the data ingestion, transformation, and delivery pipelines that feed the Enterprise Knowledge Graph — ensuring correctness, completeness, and freshness of knowledge at scale.
- Own the reliability and operational health of our Kubernetes infrastructure — monitoring system state, diagnosing incidents, and independently restoring services when issues arise outside European business hours.
- Be the first responder for platform incidents during India business hours: triage alerts, assess impact, execute recovery procedures, and hand off with clear context to the European team — ensuring the system is stable before they start their day.
- Develop and evolve knowledge graph data models, RDF-based ontologies, and SPARQL queries that structure and power our AI application's reasoning and retrieval capabilities.
- Build automated data quality checks and evaluation pipelines that detect regressions and ensure the knowledge graph remains accurate and consistent.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipeline development and infrastructure-as-code, supporting reliable, automated delivery.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and product owners across time zones to deliver platform improvements and resolve cross-functional dependencies.
- Mentor junior engineers on data engineering practices, Kubernetes operations, and knowledge graph fundamentals.
What you bring
- Total of 10+ years of professional experience
- 6+ years of professional experience in data engineering or backend software engineering, with demonstrated ownership of production systems.
- Strong, hands-on Kubernetes expertise: you are comfortable diagnosing pod failures, inspecting logs, managing deployments, and restoring service health independently — without waiting for guidance.
- Solid experience with cloud-native infrastructure on a major cloud platform (SAP BTP, AWS, GCP, or Azure); familiarity with Helm, K8s Operators, Crossplane, Flux, ArgoCD, kubectl, and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
- Proven experience building and operating data pipelines at scale — including ETL/ELT workflows, streaming infrastructure (Kafka or similar), data validation, and pipeline monitoring.
- Comfort operating as an on-call engineer: you can independently triage and resolve incidents, distinguish signal from noise, and communicate status clearly to a distributed team.
- Experience with observability tooling: Grafana, Prometheus, alerting with BTP Alert and Notification service, and log analysis.
- Solid understanding of knowledge graph or semantic technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL) — or a demonstrable aptitude and motivation to develop this expertise quickly.
- Strong programming skills in Python; experience with TypeScript or Java is an advantage.
- Excellent written and spoken English; ability to collaborate asynchronously and hand off clearly across time zones.
- B.Tech or M.Tech in Computer Science, Information technology, or a related field.
Where you belong
SAP Global Content Group (GCG) builds the Enterprise Knowledge Graph to unify SAP's business and system knowledge, delivering it via a platform and a neuro-symbolic AI application used across SAP and by external customers. This role is based in India — our India team is primarily located in Gurgaon — and plays a pivotal part in ensuring global service continuity: you are the team's operational presence during hours when Europe is offline. Join a global team of engineers, researchers, and AI experts building the semantic foundation of SAP's intelligent enterprise.
