EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS
As part of SAP’s global Cloud Data Center Operations Team, the Data Center Engineer will be responsible for the management and oversight of a dedicated Data Center location, ensuring continuous, secure, and compliant operations. This role involves coordinating with internal teams and external service providers to manage infrastructure, capacity planning, and asset management while supporting financial and contract-related activities. The ideal candidate will be expected to participate in global conference calls across time zones (Central European times) and handle both technical and administrative responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Co-location Management:
- Oversee data center co-location operations, ensuring high standards and conducting regular service reviews.
- Maintain effective relationships and communication with external service providers/vendors involved in data center operations.
Build Activities and Project Orchestration:
- Lead the execution and orchestration of all build activities and projects in the data center.
- Ensure timely and coordinated project delivery, maintaining project documentation and status reports.
Capacity Planning and Asset Management:
- Monitor and manage data center capacity, including power, space, and cooling needs.
- Oversee inventory management, maintaining accurate asset records, and planning for future data center growth.
Financial and Contract Management Support:
- Assist with budgetary considerations, expense tracking, and cost analysis for data center operations.
- Support contract management by working with procurement, legal, and finance teams to ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
Data Center Security and Compliance:
- Ensure data center security protocols are maintained, including access control, surveillance, and incident management.
- Maintain compliance with industry standards and organizational policies for data center operations.
Education and Qualifications / Skills and Competencies
Required Skills:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Strong understanding of data center infrastructure, including servers, storage systems, networking, and power/cooling systems.
- Proven experience with hardware installations, configuration, and maintenance.
- Proficient in data center management tools and monitoring software.
- Familiarity with virtualization, cloud infrastructure, and networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments and manage emergency situations.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of SAP infrastructure and cloud services.
- Understanding of contract management and financial principles relevant to data center operations.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in data center management and IT infrastructure.
- 5+ years of IT operational experience with a focus on coordinating and overseeing tasks performed by other team members.
- Demonstrated professionalism, with the ability to interface effectively across organizational levels and with external partners.
