The HANA Reliability Engineering team is a dedicated team of talented development engineers who are responsible for keeping the wide range of services that are part of the HANA Cloud running. This team works on some of the most complicated and difficult engineering tasks in order to automate and mitigate common issues within the various HANA Cloud services. As such, the HRE team has a strong focus on HANA Cloud customers (both internal and external to SAP).


Required Skills:

  • Either already knows how to or can quickly gain knowledge on working within the HANA Cloud Landscape.
  • Either already has experience or can quickly gain knowledge in working with Kubernetes.
  • Has the ability to do detailed analysis of logs in order to mitigate issues and/or automate mitigation of these issues.
  • Either already has expertise in creating new or modifying existing alerts or can quickly gain knowledge in working with alerts.
  • Able to add diagnostics and logging to existing services.
  • Able to develop using golang, python, C/C++ or can quickly gain knowledge in this area.



  • Provide 2nd line support to Operations during normal business hours. Note that this responsibility occupies less than or equal to 25% of the engineer’s total time.
  • Analysis of the various services within HANA Cloud in order to:
    • Identify and mitigate outages.
    • Identify services that are not causing outages but are still behaving in an unexpected manner.
    • Identify new features or design/coding improvements for services that are not performing as expected. Note that in some cases we expect the HRE to also go ahead and implement the new feature or improvement if the development work is self contained and can be delivered quickly.
    • Build automation to mitigate know issues.
    • Track and analyze trends in outages and issues.
  • Build tools to:
    • Automate runbooks.
    • Automate log collection.
    • Automate analysis of known issues or outages.
    • Monitor health of the various services.
  • Be the voice of Ops and the customers. This includes:
    • Improving runbooks by making them more succinct or automating them where possible.
    • Enforcing that all new features have appropriate runbooks and are properly onboarded with Ops.
    • Enforcing that all new features have appropriate alerts.
    • Performing an evaluation of all new features to make sure that they are onboarded correctly.
    • Being consulted on the design and implementation of all new features to make sure the development teams are following best practices.
    • Note that the HRE is not responsible for implementing runbooks and alerts for other development teams; but rather, the HRE has the authority to stop a new feature from being released if it does not have the appropriate runbooks and alerts or if it does not follow best practices.
  • Provide an overview of the issues to development on a regular basis. This includes:
    • Running a regular meeting with development leaders to identify and force resolution of issues that occur regularly.
    • Building dashboards and other tools to help development understand the various issues that Ops and customers are facing on a daily basis.
  • Provide a bridge with Ops in order to:
    • Build a stronger relationship with front line operations.
    • Effect process improvements that will make it easier to deliver quality improvements in a more timely manner.
