The thesis can be done completely remotely from anywhere in Germany, but it is also possible to come to the office in Walldorf occasionally.

THE ROLE

‘Compliance as Code’ can be summarised as the organisational capability to automate the implementation, verification, remediation, monitoring and reporting of compliance status. This automation comes in the form of code, and integrated into the code repositories used by Devs and Engineers. It becomes “just another piece of code”. (Mario Patt).

Compliance as Code is a rather new field for SAP and we want to explore the possibilities further with this Master Thesis. While compliance is a wide field, we will focus on compliance to internal and external regulations that are relevant for software engineering teams during development, especially when doing Continuous Delivery. A very important and prominent field of compliance is security.

The scope of the thesis shall include

  • What is the current state of research on Compliance as Code?
  • If possible, how are other companies using Compliance as Code and what is their experience with it?
  • Reach out to the SAP development community, with more than 30.000 software engineers, and explore potential use cases for Compliance as Code at SAP
  • Implement a prototype of Compliance as Code, connecting to our internal compliance management system “Sirius” and our source code management system GitHub (implemented preferrably in Golang or TypeScript, running on existing platforms)

The thesis shall be written in English or German (English preferred).

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Student (f/m/d) at a university or a university of applied sciences
  • Preferred fields of study: informatics, business informatics or similar
  • Computer skills: experience in software development, preferably in Golang or TypeScript, and ability to implement a prototype without daily support by a senior developer
  • Language skills: very good in English (written and spoken), German as a plus
  • Soft skills: fast learner and independent working style
  • Others: experience with or high interest in Compliance as Code

Your set of application documents should contain a cover letter, a resume in table form, school leaving certificates, certificate of enrollment, current university transcript of records, copies of any academic degrees already earned, and if available, references from former employers (including internships). Please also describe your experience and skills in foreign languages and computer programs / programming languages.
